Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. The path she chose wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, acting work she longed for was not available. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. She made enough money as an usherette during the day while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
